How to Prepare for a Maths Assessment

An assessment is easier to prepare for once you know what it is checking. Start by finding out what you cannot yet do.

In short

Find your gaps before you revise

Guessing what you are weak at is usually wrong. Test yourself and find out.

Work on the topics that are close

A skill you nearly have is worth more than one you have never seen.

Practise the skill underneath it

Long division before ratio problems. The gap is often one step further back.

Do a few questions against the clock

Knowing a method slowly is different from using it under time.

Learn the layout as well as the maths

Where the marks are, and how much working is expected.

Keep the last day light

A new method learnt the night before rarely survives the morning.
