How to Practise Without Getting Bored

Twenty of the same question is boring because it stopped teaching you after the fourth. Practice should stay slightly hard.

In short

Stop once it is easy

When you can do it, more of it teaches nothing. Move on.

Mix topics in one session

Switching between topics feels harder and works better, because you have to choose the method.

Make the numbers harder, not the list longer

Five awkward questions beat twenty tidy ones.

Set a small target

Six questions, or ten minutes. A finish line changes how it feels.

Turn it into a puzzle

Write your own question with the answer 24, then write a harder one.

Change where you work

A different table is often enough to reset your attention.
