How to Learn From a Wrong Answer

Crossing it out and moving on throws away the most useful thing in your book.

In short

Find where it went wrong

Go through your working line by line until you reach the first line that is wrong.

Name the kind of mistake

A method you did not know, a step you missed, or a slip in the arithmetic. Each one needs a different fix.

Write the correction beside it

In a different colour, so it stands out when you come back.

Ask why the right method is right

Copying the correct answer teaches nothing. Understanding the step does.

Do a similar question straight away

Same topic, different numbers, no help.

Come back to it in a week

If it is still right a week later, it has stuck.
