Simultaneous Equations

Definition

Simultaneous equations are two equations that share the same unknowns and are both true at once. Solving them finds the single pair of values, the point where their two lines cross.

Why Do I Have to Learn This?

Simultaneous equations solve two mysteries at once, like the price of two different snacks. They pop up whenever two things depend on each other.

Key Rules:

  • 1. Line up the equations and make one unknown match by multiplying.
  • 2. Same signs subtract, different signs add, to eliminate that unknown.
  • 3. Substitute your first answer back in to find the second unknown.

Remember:

  • Common slip: forgetting to multiply every term when scaling an equation.
  • Always check both answers in the other equation, not the one you used.
  • On a graph, the solution is where the two lines cross.
