Rotations & Transformations
Definition
A transformation moves or changes a shape. Rotations turn it around a centre, reflections flip it over a mirror line, translations slide it, and enlargements scale it, the shape itself stays the same kind.
Why Do I Have to Learn This?
Rotations describe how shapes turn around a point. They are key to patterns, gears and computer graphics.
Key Rules:
- 1. A rotation needs three details: the centre, the angle and the direction.
- 2. Rotations, reflections and translations keep a shape congruent (same size and shape).
- 3. Tracing paper makes rotations easy: mark the centre, then turn.
Remember:
- •Common slip: rotating around the shape’s corner when the centre is somewhere else.
- •Clockwise 90° is the same as anticlockwise 270°.
- •Describe a transformation fully, one missing detail loses the mark.
Enlargement
Making a shape bigger or smaller by a scale factor, keeping its proportions.
Enlarging a triangle by scale factor 2 doubles the length of every side.
