Measurement

Definition

Converting units changes a measurement from one unit to another, such as metres to centimetres. You multiply or divide by the amount that links them.

Why Do I Have to Learn This?

Measuring lets us describe length, weight and capacity exactly. Cooking, building and science all depend on the right units.

Key Rules:

  • 1. Multiply when changing to a smaller unit.
  • 2. Divide when changing to a larger unit.
  • 3. Use the correct link, such as 100 cm in a metre.

Remember:

  • 1 m = 100 cm and 1 km = 1000 m.
  • 1 kg = 1000 g and 1 litre = 1000 ml.
  • A smaller unit needs more of them for the same amount.

Length

How long something is from one end to the other.

A new pencil has a length of about 18 centimetres.
