Fractions
Definition
Equivalent fractions are different fractions that show the same amount. One half and two quarters look different, but they cover exactly the same share of the whole.
Why Do I Have to Learn This?
Fractions describe parts of a whole, like half a pizza or a quarter of an hour. They are everywhere in cooking, telling the time and sharing fairly.
Key Rules:
- 1. Multiply the top and bottom by the same number to make an equivalent fraction.
- 2. Divide the top and bottom by the same number to simplify a fraction.
- 3. If two fractions shade the same amount of the same whole, they are equivalent.
Remember:
- •Whatever you do to the top, do to the bottom too.
- •Equivalent fractions sit at the same spot on a number line.
- •A fraction wall is a quick way to spot equivalent fractions.
Denominator
The bottom number of a fraction: how many equal parts the whole is split into.
In 34 the denominator is 4.
