Division

Definition

Short division is a written method for dividing by a single-digit number, often called the bus stop method. You divide each digit in turn, carrying any remainder to the next digit.

Why Do I Have to Learn This?

Dividing shares things out equally and tells you how many groups fit. You use it to split a bill, share sweets or work out how many teams to make.

Key Rules:

  • 1. Divide the digits from left to right.
  • 2. Carry any remainder to the next digit.
  • 3. Write each answer digit above the line.

Remember:

  • Check the answer by multiplying it back.
  • A remainder can be written as a remainder, fraction or decimal.
  • Estimate first so you notice a wrong answer.

Division

Sharing or grouping a number into equal parts. The answer is called the quotient.

12 ÷ 3 = 4

Animated Example:

12 ÷ 3 = 4
