Algebra: Expressions
Definition
Expanding double brackets multiplies every term in one bracket by every term in the other. Simplifying then collects the like terms into a neat expression.
Why Do I Have to Learn This?
Algebra uses letters to stand for numbers we do not know yet. It turns puzzles into rules you can use again and again.
Key Rules:
- 1. Multiply each term in the first bracket by each term in the second.
- 2. Collect the like terms.
- 3. Take care with the signs of every term.
Remember:
- •(x + 3)(x + 2) expands to x² + 5x + 6.
- •A common method is to multiply four pairs of terms.
- •The two x terms combine into one.
Algebra

In x + 3 = 7, the letter x stands for the missing number 4.
