Year 5 · Converting units

Swap between grams and kilograms, metres and kilometres

Definition

Measurement is how we describe size using units: length in centimetres and metres, mass in grams and kilograms, capacity in millilitres and litres.

Why Do I Have to Learn This?

Measuring lets us describe length, weight and capacity exactly. Cooking, building and science all depend on the right units.

Key Rules:

  • 1. Choose the right unit for what you are measuring.
  • 2. Line the zero of the ruler up with the start of the object.
  • 3. 1 m = 100 cm, 1 kg = 1000 g, 1 litre = 1000 ml.

Remember:

  • Convert to the same unit before comparing or calculating.
  • Estimate first, then measure to check.
  • Write the unit with every answer.
