Read a picture chart
Definition
Statistics is about collecting, showing and making sense of data. An average is a single value that represents a whole set, the mean is the total shared equally between all the values.
Why Do I Have to Learn This?
Statistics turn piles of numbers into a story you can read. Charts and averages help you spot patterns and make fair comparisons.
Key Rules:
- 1. Mean = add up all the values, then divide by how many there are.
- 2. The mode is the most common value; the median is the middle one when ordered.
- 3. The range (highest − lowest) shows how spread out the data is.
Remember:
- •The mean can be a value that never actually appears in the data.
- •Order the data first before finding the median.
- •A single extreme value can pull the mean a long way.
Average
A single value that stands for a whole set. Usually the mean: mean = total of the values ÷ how many values.
If three children score 5, 6 and 7 marks, the average (mean) score is 6.
