Definition
Place value is the idea that the position of a digit tells you how much it is worth. In 247, the 2 means two hundreds, the 4 means four tens, and the 7 means seven ones.
Why Do I Have to Learn This?
Place value is how we read and write every number there is. Once you know what each digit is worth, big numbers stop being scary.
Key Rules:
- 1. Each column to the left is worth ten times the column on its right.
- 2. A zero is a place-holder, it keeps the other digits in the right column.
- 3. Read big numbers in groups of three: thousands, then hundreds-tens-ones.
Remember:
- •Common slip: thinking the biggest digit makes the biggest number, it is the position that counts, not the digit.
- •Multiplying by 10 moves every digit one column to the left, it does not "add a zero" to decimals.
- •Line digits up by their columns when comparing or adding.
